"In 2002 AES Westover contracted with Storm Technologies in a partnership to engineer, design and install a fan boosted over fire air system (BOFA) on one of the plants boilers, in an effort to lower NOX emissions. The system was developed for boiler 13, an 84 Mw, Combustion Engineering Boiler, rated at 620km/hr, 1475psig/1005F at the superheater outlet, with 1005F reheat outlet conditions.
The system is comprised of a fan, which takes suction off the top of opposite ends the windbox, controlled by an inlet damper through the fan, which then pumps the air upward to points equidistant between top burner center line and the nose arch, about 15 feet above the top burners. The system is unique in that the air is delivered to the furnace at high velocity at two ports per wall, which are located in the middle of each sidewall, 8 ports total. The high velocity has a number of key points! Significant NOX reduction and 2 little/no maintenance issues, as the flame does not tend to rush to the corners which are typically associated with traditional over fire air ports located in the corner, with little motive force. NOXlevels have gone from pre BOFA levels OF 0.6-0.7#/mmbtu to the 0.26-0.32#/mmbtu levels. The other main benefit of this type of arrangement is that LOI’s tend to be in the 8-10% range.
The project was a tremendous success and paid for itself in months because of the STORM™ Total Combustion Approach and the cooperative manner of design and engineering the system between plant and STORM™ personnel."
"Storm Technologies has been an invaluable resource to the Orlando Utilities Commission in identifying multiple boiler and pulverizer related problems. STORM™’s expertise has led OUC to incorporate severaltuning and equipment changes, further increasing our efficiency on both coal fired units. STORM™ also identified several areas for heat rate improvement. We would recommend Storm Technologies as a cost-effective solution to any utility desiring improvements in pulverizer and boiler performance. "
"We have worked with Storm Technologies for several years on testing, troubleshooting and training. They are dedicated to their work and provide excellent service. Their knowledgeable staff has helped us to solve problems and educate our own staff."
